Police's newest weapon has made an impact on crime

The force's new helicopter

The new police helicopter was used for 25 hours in operations across the county in its first month in action.

The aircraft is jointly operated by the Kent force and its colleagues in Essex, and is available to either up to 20 hours a day, seven days a week.

One of its first jobs was in Halsted, Medway, searching for burglary suspects and it was also used at a Gillingham FC match, where arrests were made.

The crew also gathered photographic evidence of cannabis plants in Ashford and six people were arrested at the end of April when it directed officers on the ground to an illegal hare course meeting.

Ann Barnes, chair of the Kent Police Authority, said she was pleased the helicopter was proving its worth.

She said: "This extra tool will play a significant role in the forthcoming years and will bring big benefits to taxpayers either side of the river."
