Gills lead race to sign Maher
Gills boss Mark Stimson will offer Maher a deal next week
Exclusive by David Pritchard

GILLINGHAM are favourites to sign Kevin Maher after the midfielder trained with the club 24 hours after being released by Southend.

The 31-year-old spent the last two months of the season on loan at Gillingham, making seven appearances.

Gills boss Mark Stimson has long been an admirer of Maher but it was thought unlikely the player would return on a permanent deal while he had a contract with Southend.

On Tuesday he was among a group of players released by the Shrimpers.

Yesterday he underwent a session with Gills’ fitness coach Danny Ellis, giving an indication he would be interested in rejoining the club despite reported interest from clubs in League One.

Stimson said: “He’s gone away for a few days to get his head right. He did a good session and when he comes back I will ask for half an hour of his time and we will put something across to him.”
