Key heaps praise on Joseph and McLaren
Ryan McLaren returned figures of 5-31
By Glenn Pearson

KENT skipper Robert Key is trying hard not to get too carried away with his two young seam bowlers, Robbie Joseph and Ryan McLaren.

The pair took nine wickets between them on the opening day of the Tunbridge Wells festival against Somerset as Joseph returned figures of 4-67 and McLaren 5-31.

On a placid batting track at The Nevill Ground, the pair bowled a good line and length and reaped the rewards as Joseph took the wicket of former England opener Marcus Trescothick and McLaren uprooted ex-Australian, Justin Langer’s off stump with his first ball.

Key said: “I thought Robbie Joseph was outstanding and so was Ryan McLaren. Usually at Tunbridge Wells it swings around for the first hour and then it is pretty flat, sometimes you need your nicks to go to hand and that happened for us, but a lot of hard work needs to be done now so we can get a big score.

“I’m over the moon with Ryan McLaren. To get wickets on flat pitches is hard and that’s what they did. With RJ (Robbie Joseph) - I do not want to get too carried away, but he looks like a serious bowler this year.”

After bowling Somerset out for 208, Kent were in a commanding position at 78-2, but the loss of Key’s wicket three overs before stumps leaves the game hanging in the balance.

Key said: “I think if you lose the toss here and find yourself in the field it can be a very long day, so I think it has been a very good day for us, but shame we lost three wickets and shame I got out just before the close. At 85-2, it would have been very much our day.

“The first session on day two is going to be a big one, but it is not easy to bowl out there, it is a pretty flat pitch.

“It was all right to bat out there for a start and they started to bowl quite wide of off stump after a while.

“I was just unhappy to be out, I did all the hard work in getting to 48 – when you get to the last three overs of the day it is pretty frustrating because you set yourself up for a big score. There is nothing better than being 60-odd not out overnight, so getting out before the end is a desperate time to get out.”
