Swine flu cases reach 86 across Kent and Medway

Pupils at a Kent primary school are being tested for swine flu.

The youngsters are from Meopham Community Primary School near Gravesend.

The rest of the pupils have been told not to stay at home unless they are ill.

Across Kent and Medway there are now 86 confirmed cases of the virus H1N1 with 51 in the east of the county, 11 in Medway and 24 in west Kent.

The Health Secretary Andy Burnham announced on Thursday that the virus could not longer be contained and the UK would move into the ‘treatment phase’.

It does not mean that swine flu, which was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organisation last month, has become more deadly.

Mr Burnham told reporters: "We have always known it would be impossible to contain the virus indefinitely and at some point we would need to move away from containment to treatment.

"Cases are doubling every week and on this trend we could see over 100,000 cases per day by the end of August".

Public health experts have urged people to stay at home if they have flu-like symptoms and call their GP or NHS Direct on 0845 4647 or the Swine Flu information line on 0800 1513 513.

My son goes to valley park in maidstone. he has had flu like symptons and been pretty poorly. I have looked after him at home and after 8 days he is on the mend. How would I know if it had been swine flu. Its not tested now. I work for the NHS and was told to have 48hrs carers leave. I have only had the sore throat, temperature and acheing limbs. perhaps I have had a streaky version and not the full rasher. All joking aside, I hear there are flu like cases in a lot of the local schools.
