Motorists across the UK are being conned and we are just letting it happen.

As  crude oil prices across the world continue to fall, those nice people who sell us fuel continue to rack up huge profits.

So well done Asda today for dropping prices below £1 a litre (that's still about £4.50 odd a gallon).

I'm sure they are still making a profit and if they're not I'm sure they're using it as publicity, but well done anyway.

David Miles, Asda Commercial Director. Average UK pump prices yesterday stood at 103.8p a litre for unleaded and 105.1p for diesel.

Asda today dropped the price of both petrol and diesel to 99.9p per litre nationwide across all its 176 forecourts, despite others being reluctant to pass on recent cost falls to their customers.

David Miles, Asda Commercial Director said: "There is no justification for any major retailer selling fuel above £1 per litre."

Diesel is the interesting one as we in the UK have been used to paying more for it, the benefit being that diesels do more miles to the gallon.

This time last year diesel was 13p per litre more expensive than petrol. Now  diesel that has fallen back the most as European diesel usage has declined.  Diesel costs are currently stable and for the first time since May 2007 diesel and unleaded prices should be the same price at the pump.

I urge drivers to support these cheap retailers - I'm sure the other supermarkets will be forced to follow Asda's lead - to help keep costs down.

And yes I've heard the story about the little petrol stations in villages around Kent who can't buy petrol as cheaply as supermarkets sell.

Well in truth I don't mind paying a few quid extra to fill my tank if I'm in a village. That is a different decision about supporting your local retailers if you want to see them stay in business.

Good village butchers, village post offices, village hardware stores - and all the rest - will survive if they offer service. So petrol stations need to do the same.

Other than that, if you need to fill your car up today - get down to Asda.
