Stimson 'embarrassed' by Gills defence

Gills boss Mark Stimson
By David Pritchard

Mark Stimson admitted he was left “embarrassed” by his side’s defending as they were comfortably beaten at Southampton.

The Gills boss was particularly frustrated with two soft goals conceded before half-time after Luke Rooney had cancelled out Southampton’s opener. The 4-1 defeat was the third time this season the team had conceded four goals away from home and Stimson blamed the lacklustre performance on unnamed senior players who he felt lacked desire.

He said: “I feel for the fans because they turned up in their numbers and really got behind the boys. I think they appreciated the goal the young kid [Rooney] scored but possibly at the end they were like me embarrassed. Embarrassed because of the goals that went in – a lot of them can be stopped just by being a bit more, not aggressive but clever.

“Don’t let people run past you willy nilly, stop people. It’s an art that’s going out of defending now and a few of my boys have been told at the end it’s got to go back into their games or otherwise they will be on the sidelines watching.”

Stimson confirmed Danny Jackman had dislocated his right shoulder following a challenge early on, which could keep the midfielder sidelined for several weeks.

The one tangible positive was Rooney’s goal, coming in his first league start for the club. The 18-year-old was substituted with cramp in the second half and Stimson was delighted with the winger’s contribution.

He said: “I thought our goal wouldn’t have looked out of place in the Champions League if I’m honest. It was an unbelievable goal from a very talented youngster.”
