Child, aged seven, 'dies of swine flu'
Printable version Email to a friend Share this story Add your comment Contact us
A boy, aged seven, is reported to be the latest victim of swine flu in Medway. He is the second child in Britain to die of the illness.

The boy, from Strood, near Rochester, died earlier this week.

If the report is correct he becomes the 29th person to have died from swine flu – double the figure a week ago.

Medway council has confirmed a six year old has died but there is no official confirmation of the child's school.

It was reported that the child was a pupil at Sherwin Knight Community Infant School but this has been denied even though there is at least one teacher off with the illness.

There are also reports that the child was a pupil at the English Martyr RC School in the area. (This has been confirmed as correct 11am, see later story HERE)

It is also reported that the child was previously healthy and had no underlying health problems, although tests continue.

Keeping checking www.kentnews.co.uk for full details as this story develops during the day.

Unfortunately, even if a vaccination were available for all to have there would be a great number that choose not to...look at the MMR..it's there to protect our children but so many parents choose for their children not to have it and would prefer for them to face the consequences!

Sorry but could not avoid a reply

Fact - teacher at Sherwin Knight school had a case of suspected swine flu.

Fiction - What was reported.

I'm sorry, but you need to report the key facts correctly and not speculate.

This causes upset and frustration.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends. I feel the goverment is not revealing the true extent of how swine flu is spreading. There are 2 children from my children's school who have been given tamiflu because they are suspected of having it but this is recorded as "unconfirmed"all cases are now "unconfirmed" as Doctor's are not swabbing any more but merely speaking to patients on the phone, telling them to take tamiflu as they are suspected to have swine flu...but not confirmed!

Editor's Reply: There were widespread reports in the newspapers and TV this morning. We had to reflect that. In fact the tragic youngster's school was the English Martyrs' Catholic Primary .
It is right that news organisations inform people as soon as possible and while mistakes should be avoided, it happens. There is no malice as you suggest. I have spoken with the reporter who broke this story, and they had confirmed with a teacher that your children's school had a case of suspected swine flu.

I have two daughters in Sherwin Knight infants and a son in the juniors. With all the bad news and peoples fear around Swine flu, I am appalled how the press publicised the wrong school. They should be responsible and realise that they can reduce public panic, but perhaps they are a little bit sick and take pleasure in making matters worse.

My thoughts and sympathy go out to the parents whos son has tragically passed away.

Just an idea, but as it so close to the school holidays, why not shut the schools early, give the kids a few days extra off, this may go a little way to containing the spread.

I am from the medway towns and i know the school sherwin knight, it was my school as a child. Its sad the the children are not being given the vactionation being that they normally get bugs quicker than adults. Every one moans about things that happen to kids, well start moaning now and get our kids protected from this swine flu. I have nephews at several diffrent school in the medway towns and it worries me like mad.
