Stimson: Ashikodi not a transfer target

By David Pritchard

Gillingham manager Mark Stimson will not be following up his initial interest on Moses Ashikodi after the striker played in a friendly at Aveley on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old from Nigeria played just over an hour against the Ryman North champions in the 1-0 defeat.

Ashikodi briefly spent time at Priestfield on loan in 2005 and came on as a substitute against them for Shrewsbury in the play-off final at Wembley in May.

The Gills are looking to add at least one striker to their squad before the new season, but he did not do enough to convince Stimson to take it any further.

He said: “He came in with a late shout but I don’t think we’ll be taking it any further. He was mentioned to me last week and I said if he was interested to come along to Aveley and have a game. He went away to Belgium on Saturday and scored a hat-trick so his agent has been pestering me ever since. I’ve given him a game and you could see he’s got something, but unfortunately we’ve got to look better than that.”

The Gills will also not be offering full-back Sam Long a deal. The teenager, who was released by Charlton earlier this summer, has played several games for the club in pre-season but Stimson felt he did not have enough match experience to offer a deal.

The squad travel to France today (Thursday) for a four-day training camp, which includes a friendly against Calais on Saturday. Kick-off is at 6pm local time.
