Sunday is still a special day for most of us

Relaxing with the papers is the best way to spend a Sunday morning in Kent, according to a new study.

Gold Top milk commissioned YouGov to carry out an extensive survey into what people in Kent and the rest of the county get up to during their Sundays.

After all that laying around, the next thing on most people’s minds in Kent is doing the chores around the house.

In Kent and the South of England, we still regard our Sundays as a bit of a special day of the week.

Some 58 per cent of us enjoy a leisurely Sunday morning, spent reading the papers like Kent on Sunday, or watching TV, with 31 per cent enjoying breakfast with the family and 30 per cent indulging in a lie in.

The big downside to the day of rest for 48 per cent of Kent residents is doing the household chores.

Amazingly, it appears Kent is pretty much recession proof with 71 per cent said it has made no difference to their Sundays.

And quarter claim their Sunday is simply perfect already.

When the Sunday Trading Act was introduced 15 years ago on August 28, there were those that thought it would decimate family life, but this report finds that simply never happened.

Just 19 per cent bother going to the shops, but 25 per cent said they enjoy devoting Sunday mornings to spending time with their family.

Peter Lynas, spokesman for Keep Sunday Special, said: “The fact that only 19 per cent of people go to the shops on a Sunday morning matches our own findings that there is little desire for increased Sunday opening.

“People enjoy their leisurely Sunday morning and don't want to leave the kids and head to work.

“They would rather enjoy a great breakfast together as a family."

But we still want the shops open, the report found. We like the convenience should we need them.

A mere 15 per cent wanted to go back to the old days when they were all shut.
