Denly in England one day squad

Joe Denly has been included in the final England squad to face Australia in the One Day International and Twenty20 series.

The Kent opener will also travel to South Africa for the Champions Trophy in the autumn and is the only uncapped player in England’s 15-man squad.

The call-up is the biggest yet for the 23-year-old has gradually worked his way closer to the first team. In the last 18 months he has toured New Zealand with the England Lions and was included in a performance squad in India. Earlier this summer he played for the Lions against Australia at Worcester.

National selector Geoff Miller feels it is a great chance for Denly to stake a claim for a regular place in the side.

He said: “Joe Denly has impressed the selectors for a while with some excellent performances in One-Day cricket and with Kevin Pietersen unavailable through injury, this is an excellent opportunity for Joe to step up to the next level and show what he is capable of.”

Denly, who has averaged more than 50 in the Friends Provident Trophy this season, was delighted with the call-up.

He said: “I'm pretty happy to be in the revised squad. When the 30-man group was initially announced, I knew it would be tough for me because there were some quality players in there, but I've kept performing for Kent and have now been given my chance by England.

“It is a dream come true for me. As a youngster, I dreamt about representing Kent and now I have the honour of hopefully playing for my country. I've always had ambitions of playing for England; whether it be at one-day or Test match level. I feel very proud and hope to forge a long international career.”

Kent skipper Rob Key was one of those not to make the final selection after being included in the initial 30-man squad.

Denly’s first chance to play will be against Ireland in Belfast on August 27, before two Twenty20 games against Australia at the end of the month. The seven-game one day series begins on September 4.

England begin their Champions Trophy campaign against Sri Lanka in Johannesburg on September 25.
