War of words breaks out over weeds in Medway roads

The Liberal Democrats have accused the Tory council of being too green and eco-friendly – by allowing weeds to grow in Medway’s roads, pavements and alleys.

Gillingham South councillor Geoff Juby has compiled a list of 37 roads in and around his ward that he says are overrun with weeds.

The list includes Canterbury Street, Byron Road, Watling Street and Balmoral Road.

Mr Juby – who has taken these photographs of the blossoming vegetation - said: “I know that the new Conservative Party claims to be green but the fact that they seem to be preparing for the return of the horse and cart is a new story.

“When walking around the Medway Towns I have been compiling a little list of roads where the weeding has clearly been missed.

“The list I have sent in so far to officers has 37 streets on it.

“I’m sure the residents of Medway will be able to identify dozens more roads the Tory-run council is neglecting.”

Medway Council’s front line services boss Phil Filmer replied: “This isn’t a case of roads being neglected or missed as the Liberals are trying to suggest.

“The council’s contractors carry out weed treatments twice a year, once in March and again in September.

“However, because this summer has been ideal weed growing weather, the cleansing operation has been brought forward and started this week instead of beginning in September.”
