More than 3,500 potential students took a tour of MidKent College’s new £86 million campus during a one-day topping out festival.
The celebratory open day event, called Access All Areas, featured campus tours, careers advice, department demonstrations and live performances from top-quality bands and DJs.
Event organiser Craig Bennett said he was delighted with the turn-out.
“Access All Areas was an amazing success,” he said.
“Visitors benefited from some pretty spectacular live entertainment.
“However, the event was not just about great music.
“It was about giving young people in Medway a chance to celebrate the opening of this fantastic new campus, take a look at the stunning facilities on offer, and find out about options for their future with the help of our impartial careers advisers.”
Teenager Erin Nisbet took the chance to get to know her way around the new campus buildings a few weeks earlier than some of her peers.
The 16-year-old former Rainham School for Girls pupil said: “I’ll be coming here to study health and social care in a few weeks.
“This is the first time I’ve actually visited the campus. I’m so impressed; it’s huge and modern. I can’t wait for the start of term now.”
Multi-award-winning rapper Chipmunk performed at the busy event, alongside a number of Medway acts, including Underground Heroes, Tyrannosaurus Alan, Jordan Parkinson and Phoebe Peek.
The eighteen-year-old from Tottenham, London, performed a number of tracks including his current hit Diamond Rings.
“I’m always pleased to play at a college event” he said. “If my being here makes young people want to come along to see the college buildings and maybe even decide to continue into further education, then it’s all good.“
The Gillingham campus boasts more than 600 rooms and houses top-quality training facilities across a wide range of subject areas including construction, engineering, performing arts, music, hair design and holistic therapies.
The new campus will be able to accommodate nearly 30 per cent more students than the previous sites in Chatham and Rochester.
Many facilities, such as the hair design and holistic therapy salons, arts and dance studios, bistro and travel agency will be open to the public.
