Overseas bowler signs for Kent

Kent’s push for the County Championship Division Two title has been strengthened after the club signed an overseas player for the final month of the season.

An internationally-renowned bowler was registered before Thursday’s deadline, but Kent have delayed naming the player until his visa application is successful. It is hoped the process will be completed as soon as possible after the bank holiday weekend.

Assuming the red tape is cleared, the new signing will provide a timely boost for Rob Key’s men. Injuries to Robbie Joseph (shoulder), Ryan McLaren (side) and Martin Saggers (knee) left Kent short of bowlers heading into the climax of the season.

The team are still fighting on two fronts and are top of Division Two in both the County Championship and Pro40. Kent chairman George Kennedy told Kent on Sunday it was essential to reinforce the squad.

He said: “We’re in a good position in both competitions but have a string of injuries as long as your arm. The young lads are doing well in the Pro40 but in the County Championship it will be good to have an experienced hand around.

“It’s an insurance policy really, I would have kicked myself if there was someone available who we hadn’t got and then the team went and missed out by a couple of points.”
