Gills look into cancelling Sodje's contract

Efe Sodje could be on his way out of Priestfield

GILLINGHAM are looking into the possibility of cancelling Efe Sodje’s contract to allow the unsettled defender to leave the club.

The 35-year-old joined Gills on a two-year deal last summer but only made 12 league starts last term. He spent almost three months out after fracturing an eye socket in November and could not force his way back into the side when he returned to fitness in the spring.

The former Nigeria international joined Bury on loan in February and was an instant hit in League Two.

Sodje was recently quoted saying he would like to join the Shakers on a permanent basis but it depended on what happened when he returned to Gills.

Now Priestfield boss Mark Stimson is trying to end Sodje’s contract a year early to allow him to leave the club.

He said: “In an ideal world it would be great if we could come to some agreement. The chairman is trying to see if we could cancel Efe’s contract because he is not in my plans for next season.”

While Sodje is unlikely to be among the squad returning for pre-season training in July, a group of players have begun training at the club to stay in shape during the break.

Four players have been going through sessions with fitness coach Danny Ellis at the club’s Beechings Way training ground.

Stimson is delighted with the attitude of the players who are doing the extra training.

He said: “It’s very encouraging. They are doing it because they have listened to what we have told them and they want to improve. It’s not about impressing me but what these players are going through now is only going to help them.

“Someone who is 20 doesn’t need the same amount of rest as a 30-year-old, the same as if you have played 20 games last season or 40.”
