American star Usher was booed as he opened the Big Weekend in Maidstone after saying “Hello Manchester”.
The R’n’B singer was first on the main stage of two-day free music festival in Mote Park at 1.30pm.
But the global star seemed to be confused about where he had jetted into, shouting to the packed tent, “Hello UK, hello Manchester.”
This was met with silence and a few boos as the crowd was confused by whether he was joking or did not where he was.
However, this did not stop his set being a roaring success as thousands of people enjoyed some of his biggest hits and new material.
Up and coming two-piece band the Ting Tings were first on the stage on the In New Music We Trust Stage, performing with great energy to a packed tent.
After their set singer Katie White said: “We really enjoyed it, it was just so hot in the tent.
“There were loads of people. I think we need to rehearse in a sauna before the next one.
“We have not played many festivals, the last time was in Texas and I fainted on stage, so I least I got through this one.”
She added: “We have not been to Maidstone before, but this is the Garden of England right and everything is so green and the park is great.
“Everyone is in a very good mood and so chilled out. We love performing live, that is what it is all about and the crowd’s reaction was amazing.”
Radio 1 DJ Edith Bowman, who is due to give birth to a son next month, introduced the Ting Tings.
She said: “I am really happy. I came down last night and it could not be better weather, it is phenomenal, and there is a really nice atmosphere about the place.
“Driving into this morning it was like being at the Reading Festival, there were crowds of people with provisions and cowboy hats.
“I am looking forward to seeing the White Lies on the Introducing Stage and the bands on the In New Music We trust Stage with We Are Scientists, Guillemots and Foals.”
She said she has been surprised how easy it has been attending the festival despite being heavily pregnant.
Edith said: “I feel I am cheating as it has been easy for me. I am sure he will be kicking tonight though.
“I am even not missing alcohol. Everyone knows I like a drink and a party, but it’s been quite fun being on the side seeing everyone else getting annihilated.
“But I am looking forward to a glass of Pimms in the sun after the birth.”
