KENT NEWS: Five of Kent’s Tory MPs signed an Early Day Motion calling for the voting reform referendum to be moved because it clashes with devolved elections.

Mark Reckless (Rochester and Strood), Tracey Crouch (Chatham and Aylesford), Adam Holloway (Gravesham), Bob Stewart (Beckenham) and Michael Fallon (Sevenoaks) are among 44 fellow Conservatives to have backed the motion.

They believe that holding the referendum on May 5 next year – the same day as the Welsh Assembly, Scottish Parliament, Northern Ireland Assembly and some local council elections – could "cloud the referendum debate".

The EDM says the clash would "artificially inflate turnout in some parts of the country but not others, and may accordingly advantage one campaign at the expense of the other".
