GILLINGHAM first team coach Mark Robson admits he would be tempted if rumours linking him to the vacant Colchester United job turn out to be true.
The former Tottenham and West Ham midfielder left Charlton Athletic after nine years on their coaching staff this summer in the hope of becoming a manager.
He accepted old friend Mark Stimson’s invitation to join Gillingham in August, but is not on a contract with the club and would be free to leave if offered a post elsewhere.
Robson told Kent News he would be interested in the job at Colchester if he were asked to apply for it.
He said: “It’s a lovely club with a brand new stadium. It’s very well run with a good chairman, if I’m honest I think they have a very good squad as well so of course it’s something that would interest me but you never know in football. If it came up I would be interested.
“When I came here [Gillingham] it was on the basis that I don’t have a contract with Gillingham, which is fine. There hasn’t been any commitment from either party which suits both of us, but that could change.”
Robson’s stay at Priestfield may be a short one, but he has been impressed with the set-up at the club and believes the squad have what it takes to make an immediate return to League One.
He said: “It’s been good, very enjoyable. It’s a good bunch of lads to work with who always give you their all and the staff are excellent as well, I have been welcomed by everybody.
“I think we are more than capable of being in the play-off positions, absolutely. I think on our day if we can perform consistently well like we did against Grimsby then I think we could go up automatically.”
