The experience of patients at two Kent hospital trusts was among the worst in the country, according to a survey by the health watchdog.
Nationally, the Healthcare Commission found that people treated in NHS hospitals were generally happy with their care, but there were increased concerns over cleanliness and hand hygiene.
At Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust only 45 per cent of patients said that as far as they knew, doctors always washed their hands between patients.
A spokesman for the trust said superbug rates had fallen dramatically.
Medway NHS Foundation Trust also performed badly, with 55 per cent of patients sleeping in mixed sex wards.
A spokeswoman said: “We realise that with 21st century lifestyles, choice and flexibility are paramount and we will continue to work hard to deliver these.
“We also realise that our patients need dignity and privacy and our longer term building projects will see the introduction of single, en-suite rooms and new facilities which will greatly improve the patient experience at Medway.”
