Neighbourhood task team
A teenage shoplifter was handed a hefty fine after being caught stealing a 70p soft drink from a Parkwood Green supermarket.

The 16-year-old was given an £80 fine by Neighbourhood Task Team officers – enough money to pay for the drink 114 times over – and banned from the Somerfield store.

Three other thieves have also been apprehended by the Task Team at the shop during the summer.

Darren Adcock, of Luton Road, Chatham, was caught of CCTV stealing £40 worth of meat on June 7.

He pleaded guilty to theft at Medway Magistrates Court and was ordered to carry out 100 hours of community service and pay £60 costs.

A fellow meat thief, aged 38, of no fixed abode, was handed an £80 fine after trying to make off with £50 of goods on June 21.

A fourth theft is currently under investigation.

The Task Team has also worked with residents to curb anti-social behaviour in the area.

Officers were informed during police surgeries that large groups of teenagers were gathering around benches on Parkwood Green and causing criminal damage.

The benches have subsequently been removed.

A resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “It has made such a difference to the area.

“We have lived here for 32 years and have noticed a real improvement this summer in terms of people using the Green.

“Young families have been having picnics and children have been enjoying playing together without feeling intimidated by groups of teenagers who frequently gathered in large numbers around the two benches.

“This simple act has had a huge impact.”

Task Team Sergeant Louise Sherlock said: “The team’s role is to listen to local people’s concerns and act on them.

“Residents in Parkwood used their surgeries effectively and brought issues of anti-social behaviour and criminal damage to our attention.

“Working together with the community we are able to direct all of our efforts onto these concerns and provide long-term solutions.

“Regular police officers and Police Community Support officers will continue to work in the Parkwood area to back up our work there.”

Chief Inspector Peter de-Lozey added: “The work that the two Task Team’s have done highlights the value that they bring to policing in Medway.

“They are two dedicated teams of officers who can target areas identified by communities as having specific problems.

“They have already had success in combating anti-social behaviour in Chatham and reinforcing Gillingham’s alcohol control zone.”
