Mulligan wants Priestfield exit
Gary Mulligan wants to play in League One
Exclusive by David Pritchard

GILLINGHAM striker Gary Mulligan wants a move away from Priestfield following the club’s relegation last weekend, according to manager Mark Stimson.

The club took out an option on his contract this week to keep the 23-year-old at Gills for another year.

But in a meeting with Stimson this week the Irishman revealed he did not want to drop a division.

Stimson told Kent News:“Gary has been very honest with me and said he wants to stay in League One. We had an option on his contract which we have taken out to keep him here for another year, so if he gets offers from League One sides they will have to talk to me.”

Mulligan joined the club initially on loan from Sheffield United in January 2006.

He moved to Priestfield on a permanent deal that summer and his work rate established him as a fans’favourite.

But the striker has struggled to score regularly, netting just five goals from 34 appearances this season.

He appeared to fall out with Stimson in March and spent a month out of the team, but came back in for the club’s last three games of the season.

Gillingham released six players this week as Stimson began clearing out the squad to prepare for the new season.

Kevin Maher, Georges Ba, Leroy Griffiths, Craig Stone, Barry Cogan and Kelvin Jack were all told their deals would not be renewed.

Goalkeeper Derek Stillie also left the club, retiring from the game to focus on a legal career.

And Stimson suggested they would not be the last players to leave this summer.

He said:“There are still one or two around us we would like to shift but they still have contracts which makes it a little harder.

I’m hoping by the time pre-season comes they will have gone.”

Of the rest of the squad, Wales international Andrew Crofts is the most likely to attract interest from other clubs and could end his long association with the Gills for the sake of his international career.

The departures will make room for new signings, with Stimson already targeting the players he wants to help the club bounce back from relegation.

A striker with physical presence tops his summer wish-list, while the squad also needs goalkeeping cover and the addition of some pace on the flanks.

The Gills boss has also been busy working to keep the players he wants to stay at the club.

Negotiations are continuing with centre-half Danny Cullip, while Simon Royce, Andy Pugh and Luis Cumbers signed new deals.
