Miller: Leeds win struck blow to Gills' rivals

Adam Miller felt Saturday’s surprise victory over Leeds United will have hurt Gillingham’s rivals in the battle to avoid relegation into League Two.

Miller scored the first goal and made the second as the Gills recorded their most important victory of the season.

The midfielder admitted he was not expecting maximum points, but felt it would have struck a psychological blow against their rivals for the drop.

He said: “It’s just huge, but not only that I think it has a knock-on effect to teams down there. A lot of them won and they must have thought ‘that’s it, we’ve jumped above Gillingham’. They must have seen the result afterwards and must have been bowled over by it. So not only does it give us a confidence boost but it also knocks the stuffing out of other teams.”

Miller’s header was his third goal in six games and the 28-year-old’s performances in recent weeks have made him a key player for the Gills. Despite the crowd chanting his name after the goal, Miller is well aware he still divides opinion among the Priestfield faithful.

He said: “Don’t be fooled by that one, give it a week, I’ll give the ball away and it will be ‘Miller get off, go back to non-league, you’re rubbish’. I hear it all the time but I’ve said it many times it spurs me on when I hear them because I can’t wait to prove them wrong. I scored against Leeds and I like to feel I had a big part in winning.”
