MEDWAY Mariners continued to build their early season form as they beat Brentwood Stags to move up to third in baseball’s British AA South division.
In a close game in Essex the Mariners won 4-3 to win their second successive match.
Both pitchers showed good control on the mound, with Dicky Gofton of the Mariners finding plenty of movement with his breaking ball to strike out several Stags players.
Through the first 7 innings the Stags struggled to get runners on to the bases, whereas Medway got runners aboard in most innings, but were unable to get the key hit to bring them round to score.
Defensively, the Mariners were also on their game, with Gary Walton in particular making several diving plays at third base to deny the Stags.
Mariners really took control when Nick Taylor homered over the left field fence to score a solo home run. Other than couple of runs scoring on errors in the eighth inning, the Stags never really threatened for the rest of the game.
Mariners are now just half a game back from the league leaders and will hope for the same result when they visit the Stags again this Sunday.
