Gills skipper could need nose surgery

Gillingham vs Leeds United By David Pritchard

Barry Fuller could be set to miss Gillingham’s run-in after doctors raised the possibility he may need surgery after fracturing his nose last weekend.

The Gills skipper clashed heads with team-mate Darren Dennehy as he made his first touch in Saturday’s 3-2 win over Leeds United at Priestfield. Despite Fuller wanting to play on the club doctor ruled it out straight away and the full-back was taken to Medway Hospital.

The 25-year-old was diagnosed with a fractured nose, but is due to see specialists tomorrow (Tuesday), who will decide whether it needs surgery. Despite the setback, Fuller felt it did not automatically rule him out of the club’s remaining games.

He said: “Even if I need surgery I might be able to put it on hold until the end of the season. My breathing is the main thing they’re worried about because my nose is flat on my face and if I’m running about there could be a problem with my airway if I get another knock. It’s all down to what the surgeon says.

“I can’t remember the injury that clearly. I was going for the ball and the next thing I knew I was on all fours with my hand on my nose. The blood was coming out like a tap.”

It is the latest injury problem for Fuller, who is still wearing protective strapping after breaking his arm playing against Leyton Orient in February.

The Gills skipper is not due back into the club until Thursday, by which stage it should be known whether an operation is needed. If it has to happen straight away, Fuller will have very little time to recover if he is to return before the end of the season on May 8.
