The fallout of Gillingham FC’s relegation to the bottom tier of English football looks set to worsen with the official shirt sponsors cutting their funding ahead of the new season.
Kent Reliance Building Society has confirmed it is in talks with the Gills regarding the amount it will give the club this year.
The Chatham-based firm pays to have krbs.com on the players’ shirts and to have the team’s home ground of Priestfield stadium preceded by krbs.
A three-year deal was struck up between the parties last year, however the overall value of the arrangement was based upon success – or failure- on the field.
Chief executive Mike Lazenby said: “An agreement for year one was based upon Gillingham being in League One.
“If they were promoted, we would be negotiating to pay more, but because they were relegated, we’re negotiating to pay less.”
Talks are continuing ahead of the Gills’ opening game of the 2008/09 campaign, away to Bournemouth on Saturday August 9.
