Prime Minister Gordon Brown says Kent is set to be a major political battleground during the general election which will be held on Thursday May 6.

And he looks set to ,make a whistle stop tour of the county within hours of seeing the Queen  and calling the General Election.

Kent  is home to six marginal seats including Dartford – a so-called weathervane constituency that has backed the winner at every General Election since 1964.

Today (Tuesday) Mr Brown is believed to be setting off on a quick tour of the county via high-speed train.

The Labour leader said: “It’s an incredibly important battlefield, but it’s important because what we want to do to ebsure our economy is secure is important to every single citizen.”

Labour’s marginal’s are Dartford (Howard Stoate majority 706), Dover (Gwyn Prosser majority 4,941), Gillingham and Rainham (Paul Clark majority 254), Rochester and Strood (formerly Medway, Bob Marshall-Andrews majority 213), Thanet South (Stephen Ladyman majority 664) and Sittngbourne and Sheppey (Derek Wyatt, majority 79).

The other marginal seat is held by Conservative Adam Holloway who has a 654 majority in Gravesham.

Whoever the result goes the county is guaranteed to have at least four new MPs.

Folkestone and Hythe MP Michael Howard who has been MP since 1983 is standing down, as is Maidstone and Weald MP Ann Widdecombe, who was first elected in 1987.

For Labour’s side, Sittingbourne and Sheppey MP Derek Wyatt, along with Dartford’s Dr Howard Stoate and Medway's Bob Marshall-Andrews are also quitting. All were elected in 1997.

The Green Party, English Democrats, UKIP and the BNP are also set to field candidates in the county’s seats.
