Arafat effort in vain as Kent lose at Essex
Yasir Arafat hit a six off the last ball but it wasn't enough to prevent Kent slide to defeat
AFTER winning two games in the final over of their Twenty20 campaign, the Kent Spitfires’ luck ran out as the Essex Eagles beat them by one run last night.

The Spitfires needed 14 off the final over at Chelmsford to chase down their target of 148, and despite Yasir Arafat hitting the final delivery for six, Kent fell just one run short to make it two defeats in five Twenty20 games this season.

Captain Rob Key was bowled by Graham Napier for a first ball duck but Joe Denly, fresh from scoring four half centuries in his previous four knocks, and Martin van Jaarsveld steadied the ship after putting on 48 for the second wicket.

South African batsmen, van Jaarsveld, departed to the first ball of Danish Kaneria’s over for 32 before Justin Kemp, who is yet to find form in the competition, was bowled by Ryan tenDoeschate for 15.

Denly was unable to covert his good start and was bowled by former Kent seamer David Masters for 24 to leave the Spitfires reeling on 85-4.

Darren Stevens blasted 14 from just eight balls before he became one of four wickets for Grant Flower, who also claimed the wickets of Geraint Jones (15) and Azhar Mahmood (20).

Ryan McLaren fell for three and in the end Arafat (14 not out) and James Tredwell (2 not out) were left with too much off the final over.

Earlier, the Eagles made 147-5 thanks to 44 from Jason Gallian and an unbeaten 41 from James Foster.

Tredwell was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2-25, while Mahmood claimed 1-21 from his four overs.

The Spitfires are back in action on Friday against the Middlesex Crusaders at Beckenham.
